MIS Researcher of the Year
Prize: NA, Number of Awards: 1, Coordinated by: IT Awards coordinator
Given annually to a faculty member or PhD student to recognize excellence in published research.
-
Candidates for award:
All full time primary and secondary faculty and PhD students of the MIS department.
- Criteria:
The award will be decided on the basis of the maximum number of publications in the previous calendar year.
For the 2008 award, publications in 2007 will be considered. Articles need to have appeared in print to be
considered. Only articles which were published with Temple University as the affiliated organization will
count. The publications will be weighted by category. All tier I level articles will receive 5 points. Tier
II articles will receive 2 points. The FSBM journal list will be used to decide the tiers of articles. All
other refereed articles that are listed in Cabell’s list of refereed journals will receive 1 point. Finally,
1 bonus point will be awarded for every Tier I article in an MIS journal (currently MISQ and ISR), so
articles in those journals would receive 6 points. Articles in any journal in any discipline qualify for
Tier I as long as they are on the FSBM overall list and they are MIS centric. If the MIS focus of an article
is not obvious then the awards coordinator will rely on the author for clarification. If the article is
in a high quality journal that it is not on the FSBM list then it is up to the author to provide compelling
evidence to the awards coordinator of its stature and fit into Tier I or Tier II. Finally, to be consistent
with our orientation, the following exception applies to the above point system. If a faculty member has a
tier I MIS journal article and no other faculty has such an article, then in that year that faculty will be
declared the recipient of the award regardless of the point system. Further, if multiple faculty have such
articles, then the competition that year will be limited to those faculty based on the points listed above,
other faculty will not be considered, regardless of the point value of their articles. If there is a doubt
on the MIS focus or tier of an article then the awards coordinator will form an ad-hoc committee to resolve
the issue.
- Selection process: All MIS faculty and PhD students are requested to
forward their current CV or list of eligible articles to the Awards Coordinator. If the CV is not
received by the due date, the latest CV on file with the department chair will be used. The coordinator
will prepare a table with each nominee’s publications and the weighting as per the formula above. The
person with the highest weighted score will be the MIS Researcher of the Year.
